She was educated in these two cities and later in the United States. She got a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in English Literature and Psychology from Bombay University, 1974; and a Master of Arts in Communications from the Graduate School of Corporate and Political Communication, Fairfield University, Connecticut, 1977. She worked as a staff writer in WNET-Channel 13 in New York, and from 1979 to 1984, she worked as an editor in the Mumbai, Chennai and New Delhi offices of Orient Longman, where she was responsible for the social science, fiction and women\u2019s studies lists. From 1985 to 2005, she worked as a freelance professional editor for a range of academic institutions and foundations. She is, at present, a writer based in New Delhi.<\/p>\n
In 1995, Hariharan challenged the Hindu Minority and Guardianship Act as discriminatory against women. The case, Githa Hariharan and Another vs. Reserve Bank of India and Another<\/a>, led to a Supreme Court judgment in 1999 on guardianship.<\/p>\n Githa Hariharan\u2019s published work includes novels, short stories, essays, newspaper articles and columns. Her first novel,\u00a0The Thousand Faces of Night<\/a>\u00a0(1992) won the Commonwealth Writers\u2019 Prize for best first book in 1993. Her other novels include\u00a0The Ghosts of Vasu Master<\/a>\u00a0(1994),\u00a0When Dreams Travel<\/a>\u00a0(1999),\u00a0In Times of Siege<\/a>\u00a0(2003),\u00a0\u00a0Fugitive Histories<\/a>\u00a0(2009) and\u00a0I Have Become the Tide<\/a>\u00a0(2019). A collection of highly acclaimed short stories,\u00a0The Art of Dying<\/a>, was published in 1993, and a book of stories for children,\u00a0The Winning Team<\/em>, in 2004. Her collection of essays,\u00a0Almost Home: Cities and Other Places,<\/a>\u00a0was published in 2014. She has also edited a volume of stories in English translation from four major South Indian languages,\u00a0A Southern Harvest<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(1993), co-edited a collection of stories for children,\u00a0Sorry, Best Friend!<\/a>\u00a0(1997), a collection of essays titled\u00a0From India to Palestine: Essays in Solidarity<\/a>\u00a0(2014), co-edited\u00a0Battling for India: A Citizen\u2019s Reader<\/a>\u00a0(2019) and edited the collection This Too Is India: Conversations on Diversity and Dissent<\/a> (2024). Most recently, she has co-edited the collection The View from Here: Stories and Poems of Many Indias<\/a> (2026).<\/p>\n Hariharan\u2019s fiction has been translated into a number of languages including French, Italian, Spanish, German, Dutch, Greek, Vietnamese, Urdu, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Marathi. Her essays and fiction have also been included in anthologies such as Salman Rushdie\u2019s\u00a0Mirrorwork: 50 Years of Indian Writing 1947-1997<\/em>. She wrote a monthly column for many years on different aspects of culture and their political and social underpinnings, in\u00a0The Telegraph<\/em>, Kolkata. She has been Visiting Professor, Writer-in-Residence or Writing Fellow in several universities, including Dartmouth College and George Washington University in the United States, the University of Canterbury at Kent in the UK, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and\u00a0the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS), Johannesburg, South Africa; and\u00a0in India, Jamia Millia Islamia and Goa University.<\/p>\n Hariharan was one of the founders of the Indian Writers Forum, and a consulting editor to its sites, the\u00a0Indian Cultural Forum<\/a>, and the Forum\u2019s journal of
